Back to the callback. An agent loop is a buffer callback with a longer deadline and far worse determinism. Fifteen years of chasing real-time systems turns out to have been preparation for this exact problem. I am still doing the only thing I have ever done: trying to make the machine respond in time, and caring how it feels when it does.
